Week beginning - Monday 15th June 2020

The Bubble Bee's have had another busy week. In the pictures below they were planting bean seeds and I understand that there is now a competition going on between Bubble Bee's and the Reception class bubble to see who grows the tallest bean. We discussed what a seed needs in order to grow! The children are responsible for watering their own seed!

We had another wonderful morning in the forest school area on Wednesday. The children enjoy wand making, exploring the mud kitchen, pond dipping and making up with own imaginative games too! Mrs Baker and I enjoyed hearing some children read too.

In English we have been busy exploring information leaflets. We looked at a variety of leaflet and discussed and identified their features. We looked for the similarities and differences which led to us writing comparatively. On Thursday we undertook some research into the NHS, an organisation that Mrs Baker and I feel the children should have a good understanding of, especially at the moment. We used video clips and a power point presentations to find out lots of information. We recording our findings by creating a spider diagram. We found out about PPE and Mrs Bales dressed Jessie up so that the children knew exactly what PPE is what how it protects NHS staff. Next week we are going to transfer our notes into full sentences and start writing our own information leaflet all about the NHS.

In Maths the children have been looking at number bonds to 10, 20 and 100 as well as doubling. Today they are learning how to add two digits numbers!

Additional learning:

Obstacle Course Fun Task your child with designing and making their very own obstacle course in the garden / living room. Ask them to draw and label their design first and include all of the equipment they need. They can then use their design to create their obstacle course. Ask the family to complete the obstacle course whilst your child times them. Your child could even make medals from tin-foil or any other suitable material and present them to the winner during a winner’s ceremony.

Make a Family Mascot Your child could make their very own family mascot using materials from around the house. First of all, visit the Olympic Mascot Official list here and look at past mascots. What makes a good mascot? What qualities does the mascot represent?

Week beginning - Monday 8th June 2020

We have had an exceptionally enjoyable second week back at school and the children have worked very hard with their phonics, handwriting, English, Maths and outdoor learning!

In English we used our plans to begin writing our stories; we carefully considered each part of our story individually: characters, setting, problem and solution, ensuring that when we joined these together, our story made sense and the progression was evident. We regularly shared what we had written in order to share and support each other with ideas. Once we had written our story we took some time to uplevel our writing, we considered how we could make our work better. We also checked for accurate use of capital letters, full stops and finger spaces. We are exceptionally proud of the stories we have written.
In Maths we have been focusing our learning around shape; confidently and accurately being able to name a variety of 2D and 3D shapes. To further our learning we began discussing the properties of these shapes. We also went on a shape hunt in the outside area to find as many 2D and 3D shapes in real life as possible.
On Wednesday morning we spent the morning in the Forest School area, we talked about how to keep safe outside, implementing our safe distancing. The children enjoyed pond dipping and making a huge mess in the mud kitchen! We also did some shared reading whilst we were out there which was really lovely.

Mrs Fiske very kindly brought her new kitten, Sox into school to meet us. Sox was a little bit nervous to begin with but soon got used to being around us. We couldn't believe how small he was. We are looking forward to meeting him again soon.

The Orange bubble enjoyed a session of Cosmic Kids Yoga yesterday, Mrs Baker and I were exceptionally proud of how hard the children worked when forming the correct Yogo poses and following the lady's instructions.

The children produced some wonderful artwork this week inspired by The Northern Lights. The explored chalk and paper to create their effective master pieces.

Additional activities for your children (planned and put together by the federation).
Guess Who? Ask your child to write fact cards about animals from under the sea. They can use books or websites to find out about the appearance, habitat and diet of each creature. After this, play a game of ‘Guess Who?’ using the cards and yes/no questions.
Rainbow FishDecorate your own Rainbow Fish image using collage (or other media). Can you find foil and glitter to make your picture sparkle?
Put Your Goggles On- Your child can visit this website and watch a live stream of a tropical reef. Whilst watching, ask them to sketch all of the animals that they can see. Remind them to look at the shapes and patterns on each creature and to include these in their sketches.
How do Humans Affect the Sea? Is your child aware of all of the ways that humans affect the sea and the living things within it? Talk about and investigate the impact that human beings have on the sea. Think about fishing, transport and pollution. Create a poster or information report.
The Oceans of the World- Using an atlas or the web ask your child to identify the world’s oceans. Year 1 children may need some support with this. Can they find out what animals live in each ocean? This game allows your child to practice naming and locating the oceans.
Float or sink?  Predict whether objects will float or sink in water and carry out an experiment to test                        your predictions. How can you record your findings?
