Week beginning - Monday 16th March 2020
In topic this week we have been learning about the human body. We recorded our prior knowledge on the working wall. We then watched a short BBC video clip about the parts of our bodies and added to our working wall. The children then worked in small groups, drew around one person and labelled their body parts. Year 1 and 2 were both reminded of how to effectively create labels. They finished off by colouring their human!
On Wednesday we identified a variety of habitats: field, tree, mountain, rainforest, river, sea, desert and grass and discussed their features/characteristics. We then looked at a variety of animals and placed they in the habitat where we thought they belonged. The children's learning was extended by them being asked to provide reasons for their choices.
On Tuesday we celebrated British Science Week by inviting Sally from Hands on Science into school to deliver a series of workshops. A whole school rocket workshop started off the day. The children created rockets and had a launching competition at the end. There was a lot of scientific discussion around energy, the different types and how it is produced. Year 1 then learnt all about skeletons, this linking to our topic in Science very well. While the other classes were in their workshops we did some experiments of our own! We used a bowl of water and some pepper to represent germs, when we put our finger into the water, the germs stuck to our finger. We then put our finger into the bowl with hand soap on it, the germs quickly rushed away from our fingers. We then undertook an experiment with Year 2, the mouldy bread experiment! The children got into group and decided on a variable for their bread: clean hands, dirty hands, soap and water hands and hand sanitised hands! We made predictions of what would happen to the bread after 1 week dependant on the condition of hands. We will be monitoring the bread daily to observe any changes. This is an 'observation over time' enquiry.
Happy Mother's Day from everybody in Year 1. The children enjoyed getting the paints out this week to create a portrait of their Mummies to give as a Mother's Day gesture. They tried to think very carefully about our choice of colours and the features they included!! The children then applied their technology skills to take a picture of their portraits in order to create cards!
And then there were 9... Today was a very sad and surreal day for us but we tried to make the best out of a bad job. The children got to choose what they would like to do. We were out in the Forest School area by 9.05am and in at 11.30ish, maximising our time in the sunshine! I challenged the children to make rainbows using natural materials; they did a great a job. The children thought they had found a snake, they were disappointed to be informed that they were just shoots and roots that had started growing! We also enjoyed doing some reading beside the pond!
After we had been in the Forest School area, we painted some rainbows, lots of rainbows in fact! Next week Mrs Fiske and myself are going to laminate the rainbows and put them up around Sutton and the surrounding villages.
