Week beginning - Monday 3rd February 2020

In English this week we have begun studying a poem called 'The Sound Collector'. The children were split into small groups to learn one verse of the poem each. Musical instruments were used to represent the messages in the poem. When we pieced together the verses, the poem sounded fantastic!

In topic with Year 2 this week we have been researching The Wright Brothers who were famous inventors. Famous for inventing the first aeroplane! Later in the week we wrote comparatively to discuss what we had learnt about The Montgolfier Brothers and The Wright Brothers.

In Maths we have been learning how to subtract 1 digit numbers from two digit numbers. To warm our brains up, we sorted the numbers 1-30 into groups. 1 digit and 2 digit.

Year 1 (including Miss Blake) absolutely LOVED NSPCC Number Day today! We began the day by sharing a book called 'How many legs?' written by Kes Gray.  The book allowed the children to share with their families their knowledge of addition but in a very fun way. Year 1 worked with their grown up to add up how many legs there were in the book! The total being 174! We then went on to make bead strings. These are a resource used to support addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The children recognised the significance of the numbers 100 and 10. Once the bead strings had been made, I modeled how to effectively calculate an addition calculation using the resource. The children and families then had a go too! After this I modeled a subtraction question.
After the maths cafe we worked in two groups to do some baking for the cake sale that we had this afternoon. Miss Villabla's group flavored their cupcakes with chocolate chips. Miss Blake's group used cherries.
In the afternoon the children were split into their houses and then into mixed year group groups. They undertook a relay which involved a series of mathematical questions to access their fluency, problem solving and reasoning skills. Everyone worked strategically together and did a really great job.
The day was finished off with a cake sale! Thank you so much to the wonderful families of Year 1 who supported us today in whichever way you could.

Have a great weekend, see you on Monday for our local walk. Please remember sensible shoes and a waterproof coat :)
