Week beginning - Monday 9th March 2020

In Maths this week, Year 1 were introduced to money. The class began by sorting English coins from foreign coins. The class were then introduced to the value of each coin. The coins were ordered from smallest to largest value. The children were given lots of opportunities to recall the names of the coins. Mrs Bales and the children discussed what money is used for and why we have it for example. Alternative and now more common methods of payment were discussed as a class and the children expressed that they very rarely see coins being used.
The following day Miss Blake set up a shop. The children were invited to purchase just one thing from the shop, in order to purchase the item however, the children were required to make the correct amount using the coins provided. Some children found more than one way of making the amount, this demonstrated fantastic problem solving skills. The children displayed outstanding reasoning skills when they were able to discuss/reason their choice of coins. By the end of the lesson some children were beginning to purchase two items from the shop!

Happy British Science Week everyone! Mrs Baker and Miss Blake have been making the most of British Science Week, filling our topic lessons with Enquiry-based learning! We have been learning all about Animals, including humans. On Monday the children learnt the terminology for different animal groups; reptiles, amphibians, mammals, birds and fish.
On Tuesday, Year 1 and 2 applied what they had learnt the previous day by undertaking an 'Identifying and Classifying' Enquiry. The children sorted a variety of animals into the correct categories, creating a table.
On  Wednesday the children were introduced to a new 'Big Question', they made predictions about whether all animals eat the same foods. The children recorded this on a postit note and put them onto the working wall. We then discussed how we could explore the big question through an enquiry approach. The children were shown the resources and discussed the method. Using the resources provided, the children labelled the hoops and sorted the animals according to the groups they go into: carnivores, herbivores and omnivores. The children created a Venn Diagram, linking to Maths learning. Once completed, the children verbally created sentences about their findings and shared them with each other. Rich scientific language was used.

Have a lovely weekend. Next week we are looking forward to our whole school Science Day and hosting our Mother's Day tea party!
