Week beginning - Monday 2nd March 2020

In English this week we have been busy planning our own story, inspired by 'Lost and Found'. On Monday the children recapped their talk for writing to refresh themselves of the story. They then planned the characters that they wanted to include in their story.

We began the week by continuing our work on 3D shapes. We learnt about the properties of a variety of 3D shapes. The children were exposed to the following language: properties, faces, edges and vertices. On Tuesday we went for a walk around the school grounds to try and find some 3D shapes in real life, this is what we found!

On Wednesday we began looking at capacity and volume; learning what these terms mean. We explored this concept with coloured water! Additionally we reminded ourselves of the term, estimating. Estimating is when we make a sensible guess. The children estimated the volume of water in their container. Next we will be learning to measure in milliliters.

We have been focusing on Antarctica this week. On Monday the children were part of an engaging science lesson exploring the 4 seasons. The children shared their prior knowledge on the working wall. They then watched a short BBC seasons video clip which represented the seasons well. Using the stimulus they were given, the children sorted the information into the correct quarter: Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. The stimulus included: the seasons, the months of the year, key words, the weather, riddles and images.
Following this lesson, the children looked at pictures of a variety of ice sculptures, sculpted by famous sculptors. The recorded their likes and dislikes of these. Using these pictures as influences, the children then designed their own ice sculpture. The following day each child was given a block of ice to sculpture, following their design. We then evaluated our ice sculptures.
